Stephen Carl Lentz was born on November 6, 1978, in Williamsburg, Virginia. He attended North Carolina State University from 1998 to 2000, where he played basketball as a walk-on player.
Lentz pursued further studies at The King’s College and Seminary in Los Angeles and later at Hillsong International Leadership College in Sydney, Australia.
At the age of 20, Lentz and Joel Houston, son of Hillsong founder Brian Houston, had the idea to establish a Hillsong Church campus in New York City. After graduating in theology in 2003, Lentz became a youth pastor.
He co-founded Hillsong NYC in 2010, which had a significant impact on church and ministry, especially among millennials. Lentz’s unique style, including tattoos, hairstyles, and fashion trends, influenced younger pastors.
Lentz gained attention for baptizing Justin Bieber and forming friendships with notable individuals like Kevin Durant.
In 2017, he avoided directly addressing abortion during an appearance on The View but later clarified his belief that it was sinful via Twitter.
However, Lentz sparked controversy for his participation in Oprah’s SuperSoul Sunday, raising questions about a relationship with God outside of Jesus.
On November 4, 2020, Brian Houston announced that Lentz had been fired due to leadership issues, breaches of trust, and moral failures. Lentz admitted to having an adulterous affair, leading to his dismissal.
His wife also lost her employment with the church, although her conduct was not a factor.
In May 2021, Leona Kimes, a former nanny of Lentz’s children, accused him of manipulation, control, bullying, abuse of power, and sexual abuse.
Kimes alleged that the assaults occurred between 2011 and 2017.
