Desiree Ache, a 43-year-old mother, confessed to poisoning her two sons, Hagen and Theodor, with sleeping pills on April 8.
She spent the entire day next to their bodies before notifying the police about the crime in Baden-Wuerttemberg, Germany.
According to local media reports, Ache’s relatives believe she may have committed the crime after discovering that her ex-partner had found a new partner.
The public prosecutor’s office has not yet commented on the motive for the crime.
The children’s father, Stefan, had custody of the boys and was planning to pick them up on April 9 after spending the Easter holidays with their mother.
However, he was concerned about her mental health. He had also planned to go on holiday with the boys and his new partner for a week.
The police found the victims’ bodies in Ache’s apartment after her call to them.
She was arrested and charged with murder. Ache’s acquaintance said that she did not approve of Stefan’s new partner and wanted to punish him by killing his children.
The boys’ family wrote in their obituary that they were “torn away from us by violence but remain as angels.”
