Newton Leroy McPherson was born on June 17, 1943, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. His parents were Kathleen Daugherty and Newton Searles McPherson, who later adopted the name Gingrich after his stepfather. Gingrich’s father served in the Army during World War II and later worked as a history teacher and an executive in a steel company. His mother was a secretary in the Navy.

Gingrich grew up in a family that was politically active, and he became interested in politics at an early age. He attended Emory University, where he earned a B.A. in history in 1965. He then went on to earn an M.A. in history from Tulane University in 1968 and a Ph.D. in European history from the same institution in 1971.

In 1981, Gingrich married his second wife, Marianne Ginther. They had no children together, but Gingrich helped raise Marianne’s two daughters from her previous marriage. Gingrich and Ginther divorced in 2000.

In 2000, Gingrich married his third wife, Callista Bisek. They have no children together, but Gingrich has been a stepfather to Callista’s two daughters from her previous marriage. Callista is a former Congressional staffer who currently serves as the ambassador to the Holy See.
