Before his political career, Taylor worked as a management consultant at McKinsey. He played a significant role in the establishment of Fonterra, a prominent agribusiness company in New Zealand. Taylor worked with dairy farmers to develop a new business model and recommended the formation of a multinational dairy co-operative. Fonterra was launched in 2001 and has since become a successful example of business transformation.

Taylor’s early life was spent on his family’s farm called Bobingah in New South Wales. His father was a fourth-generation sheep farmer, and his mother passed away when he was young. Taylor completed his primary education in Nimmitabel and later attended The King’s School in Parramatta.

He went on to study at the University of Sydney and obtained a Bachelor of Economics and a Bachelor of Laws. Taylor was then awarded a Rhodes Scholarship and pursued a Master of Philosophy in Economics at New College, Oxford.

Following his time at Oxford, Taylor worked in management consulting for about two decades. He collaborated with his brothers and other partners to launch agribusinesses, including Growth Farms. He also ventured into his own digital agribusiness project called Farmshed, which unfortunately did not succeed.

In addition to his consulting career, Taylor served as a Director at Port Jackson Partners, where he was involved in investigating the development of a coal seam gas industry in Victoria. He also held positions at Rabobank, where he contributed to executive development programs for leading farmers in Australia and New Zealand.
