Michael Richard Pence, born on June 7, 1959, is an American politician who was the 48th Vice President of the United States from 2017 to 2021, serving under President Donald Trump. He is a member of the Republican Party and was also the 50th governor of Indiana from 2013 to 2017. Before that, he served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2001 to 2013.
Pence grew up in Columbus, Indiana, and is the younger brother of U.S. Representative Greg Pence. He attended Hanover College and Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law before working in private practice. Initially, he tried running for a congressional seat in 1988 and 1990 but was unsuccessful.
He then worked as a conservative radio and television talk show host from 1994 to 1999. In 2000, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, representing different districts of Indiana until 2013. During his time in the House, he held positions of leadership within the Republican Party.
In 2012, Pence ran for governor of Indiana and won a close race against John R. Gregg. As governor, he implemented the largest tax cut in the state’s history and advocated for increased funding for private education. He also signed bills that placed restrictions on abortions, although one of them was later modified to prevent discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
