Matthew James Keogh is an Australian politician and member of the Australian Labor Party (ALP). He has been a member of the House of Representatives representing the Western Australian seat of Burt since 2016 and has held various positions in parliament committees. Before entering politics, Keogh worked as a lawyer.
Keogh was born in Armadale, Western Australia, in 1981, and attended Mazenod College in the Kelmscott Hills. He studied politics, history, and law at the University of Notre Dame Australia and worked as a customer service officer for iiNet while at university.
After graduation, he worked at the state Department of Premier and Cabinet and the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions. Keogh later worked as a commercial lawyer with Herbert Smith Freehills and served as president of the Law Society of Western Australia in 2015.
Keogh joined the Australian Labor Party in 1997 and was state president of Young Labor in 2007. In 2016, he won the federal election for the electorate of Burt, which includes much of the more urbanised portion of the old Canning.
Following his election, Keogh was elected the deputy chair of the Labor Caucus, appointed the Labor Opposition Waste Watch spokesperson, and became a member of the House Economics Committee, the House Agriculture & Water Committee, and the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Corporations and Financial Services.
In 2019, Keogh was re-elected and allocated the portfolios of Shadow Minister for Defence Industry, Shadow Minister for WA Resources, and Shadow Minister Assisting for Small and Family Business. After the ALP’s victory at the 2022 election, Keogh was appointed Minister for Veterans’ Affairs and Minister for Defence Personnel in the Albanese government.
Keogh’s experience as a lawyer and his involvement with various parliamentary committees has equipped him well to serve in the Australian government.
