Steven Terner Mnuchin is an American investment banker and film producer who served as the 77th United States secretary of the treasury from 2017 to 2021. He was born in New York City and graduated from Yale University in 1985. Mnuchin started his career at the investment bank Goldman Sachs, where his father was a partner.

He worked at Goldman Sachs for 17 years and eventually became the chief information officer. After leaving the bank in 2002, he founded a hedge fund called Dune Capital Management and also launched a film production company called Dune Entertainment.

During the financial crisis of 2007–2008, Mnuchin bought a failed bank called Indymac and reorganized it as OneWest Bank. This led to legal issues due to questionable foreclosures. In 2016, Mnuchin joined Donald Trump’s presidential campaign and became the National Finance Chairman. He was confirmed as the Secretary of the Treasury by the U.S. Senate in February 2017.

As Secretary of the Treasury, Mnuchin supported Trump’s tax cuts and advocated for reducing personal and corporate tax rates. He also supported the partial repeal of the Dodd-Frank Act, citing its complexity. Mnuchin’s father, Robert Mnuchin, was also a partner at Goldman Sachs and is now the founder of an art gallery in New York City.
