Steven Terner Mnuchin is an American investment banker and film producer who served as the United States Secretary of the Treasury from 2017 to 2021. He was born in New York City and graduated from Yale University in 1985.
Mnuchin worked at the investment bank Goldman Sachs for 17 years, eventually becoming its chief information officer. After leaving Goldman Sachs in 2002, he founded a hedge fund called Dune Capital Management and launched a film production company called Dune Entertainment. Mnuchin also served on the boards of Kmart and Sears Holdings.
During the financial crisis of 2007–2008, Mnuchin bought the failed residential bank Indymac, reorganized it as OneWest Bank, and later sold it. He faced lawsuits over questionable foreclosures during this time. Mnuchin joined Donald Trump’s presidential campaign in 2016 and was appointed as the National Finance Chairman. In 2017, he was confirmed as Secretary of the Treasury.
As Secretary of the Treasury, Mnuchin supported Trump’s tax cuts and advocated for reducing personal and corporate tax rates. He also supported the partial repeal of the Dodd-Frank Act, citing its complexity. Mnuchin has been criticized for using offshore entities for investment purposes, although he denies using them to avoid U.S. taxes.
