Alex Eugene Newell is an American actor and singer, known for their role in the Fox musical series Glee and Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist.
They have also acted in a Broadway revival and have been nominated for a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical.
Newell was born on August 20, 1992, in Lynn, Massachusetts. When they were six years old, their father died of cancer, and their mother raised them as a single parent.
Newell completed four years of education in the first class of Kipp Lynn Academy and graduated from Bishop Fenwick High School in 2012.
During their time in high school, they participated in the school’s choir, improv club, and costume club. They were also part of their church choir.
Newell’s career in singing began with collaborations with Clean Bandit, Blonde, and The Knocks.
They were known for their role in Glee as Unique Adams and as Mo in Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist.
In 2018, they acted as Asaka in the Broadway revival of Once on This Island at the Circle in the Square Theater.
Their acting in Shucked earned them a nomination for the 2023 Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical.
Newell has cited several musicians as their influences, including Donna Summer, Sylvester, Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, and Beyoncé.
They never had any formal voice lessons before their role on Glee.
