His mother, Pilar Bardem, was an actress, and his father, José Carlos Encinas Doussinague, came from a cattle ranching family. Bardem has been married to actress Penélope Cruz since 2010. He became the ambassador of Greenpeace for the protection of Antarctica in January 2018.

Bardem gained attention for his role in the film “The Ages of Lulu” when he was 21. He appeared in other Spanish films before receiving international recognition for his performance in “Before Night Falls” in 2000.

This role earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor, making him the first Spanish actor to be nominated in that category. He turned down a role in the movie “Minority Report” and instead starred in “The Dancer Upstairs” in 2002, which was directed by John Malkovich.
