Belgium is not a country known for its snooker prowess, but Luca Brecel has been flying the flag for his nation for over a decade.
Brecel’s breakthrough year was 2010 when he won the Belgian Senior Championship and was named Belgian Sportsman of the Year in the Promising Talent category.
He was also a participant in the inaugural Power Snooker tournament held in London, where he was defeated in the first round by Ronnie O’Sullivan.
In January 2010, Brecel had a memorable victory against Stephen Hendry, the seven-time world champion, in an exhibition game held in Bruges.
Brecel won the match 4-1, much to the surprise of the audience, and it was a sign of things to come.
Later that year, Brecel made his professional debut on the main tour, where he became the youngest player ever to compete at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield during the World Championship.
Though he lost his opening match to Stephen Maguire, Brecel had arrived on the world snooker stage.
In 2012, Brecel showed his mettle by reaching the quarter-finals of the UK Championship, where he was defeated by Shaun Murphy.
The following year, he reached the same stage of the Welsh Open before losing to eventual champion Stephen Maguire.
Brecel’s first professional title came at the 2017 China Championship where he defeated Shaun Murphy 10-5 in the final.
He followed that up with a victory in the 2018 Championship League Snooker, where he overcame Liang Wenbo 3-1 in the final.
In recent years, Brecel has struggled for form and consistency, but he remains a dangerous opponent on his day.
