English actor and director, Alan Sydney Patrick Rickman was born on February 21st, 1946 in Acton, London in England.
Rickman’s father passed away from cancer when he was eight years old, leaving his mother alone to raise him and his three siblings.
He had a birth defect, a tight jaw that contributed to his famously deep voice and sluggish delivery.
Rickman attended several schools in London and developed an interest in play during his time at Latymer Upper School.
He also excelled in calligraphy and watercolor painting. Rickman received his formal education through the Direct Grant program at West Acton First School and Derwentwater Primary School in Acton.
After studying graphic design at the Royal College of Art, Rickman founded Graphiti with some friends.
However, after three years of profitable operation, he decided to focus on acting as a career.
He sent a letter to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) and studied there from 1972 to 1974.
Rickman’s first acting gig was in Die Hard, playing German terrorist leader Hans Gruber. He won the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Performance for his role as the Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991).
He also appeared in several other well-known films, including the Harry Potter series.
Rickman was recognized as one of the top actors to ever receive an Oscar nod by The Guardian in 2009.
He made his acting debut on television in Romeo and Juliet (1978), as Tybalt, and played the lead character, Obadiah Slope, in the BBC television rendition of The Barchester Chronicles.
He won Golden Globe, Emmy, and Screen Actors Guild Awards in 1996 for his portrayal of Rasputin in the television movie Rasputin: Dark Servant of Destiny.
