Karl Jones was shot by a police officer and died on April 24, 2023, during a domestic disturbance incident in the city of Lumberton. The incident took place at around 11:49 PM and the police were called to the location in response to the report of a domestic disturbance on East 5th Street in the city of Lumberton.

Upon arrival, the officers found Karl Jones upset, and an altercation ensued between him and the officers. As a result of the altercation, one of the officers opened fire on Jones, leading to his death. Jones attempted to assault one of the officers who were present at the incident.
The Lumberton Police Department has sent the incident to the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation for investigation, which is still in its preliminary phase. No new information is available at the moment. The incident will be investigated according to standard operating procedures following an officer-involved shooting.
