Lukas Van Ness is a sophomore defensive end player for the Iowa Hawkeyes. He was born in Barrington, Illinois, and is known for his well-developed physique and potential for growth.

Van Ness is an American football player who played as a defensive end for the Iowa Hawkeyes. He joined the Hawkeyes in 2020 and redshirted as a true freshman.


In a game against Iowa State, he tied the Iowa record for the most blocked punts in a single game with two.

Additionally, during spring practice in 2022, he transitioned from playing tackle to playing end position on the team.

During the 2022 season, he made an impact, recording 33 tackles, 8.5 for loss, with seven sacks in 14 appearances, earning Freshman All-American honors.

In 2022, he earned second-team All-Big Ten honors after leading the team with 11 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks among his 38 tackles in 13 games.

Van Ness is known for his athleticism, scoring 78 in athleticism score and ranking eighth in 2023 Combine EDGE.

As a standout defensive player in high school, he was awarded MSL Conference Defensive Player of the Year, first-team all-conference, and first-team all-state. Furthermore, he was also recognized as first-team all-area by Daily Herald and Pioneer Press.

Van Ness was a two-year football letterman and team captain in his senior year, helping his prep team advance to state playoffs in both his junior and senior years.

In his senior year, he recorded 67 tackles, 17 quarterback pressures, eight tackles for loss, five sacks, one forced fumble, and one blocked punt.

Van Ness’ playing style is focused on power, which he uses to defend against both the run and pass.

He has the playing strength to anchor and press blockers as a two-gapper and the power in his hips to overcome angle blocks.

Although he can improve his hand attacks for faster block shedding and broaden his rush moves beyond bull rushes, he makes impactful plays and has the potential to continue improving as a professional player.

He possesses a prototypical frame with remarkable lean muscle mass and is known to quickly burst out of his stance and capture the neutral zone.

When he sees a runner, he disengages to make a tackle with excellent timing and keeps pushing with a secondary rush effort.

Van Ness has not discussed his religion with the public. Therefore, at this moment, it is unknown whether or not he is a Christian.
