Zofia Nasierowska, born in April 1938, is regarded as one of the most influential photographers of her generation.
She grew up in the small town of Łomianki, located on the outskirts of Warsaw, Poland. Her father, Eugeniusz Nasierowski, was also a photographer and taught her the ropes of photography from a young age.
According to Zofia Turowska, the author of Nasierowska’s biography in 2009, the aspiring artist desired nothing more than to follow in her father’s footsteps.
“My father had so much passion that he could teach a chair how to photograph,” she said. “I didn’t have to go to a puppet theatre, the performance took place in the dark room, where my father would show me different tricks.”
Nasierowska’s first exhibition at the tender age of 11 led her to attend the Leon Schiller National Film School in Łódź.
Notable alumni of the university include Roman Polanski, Oscar-winning director Andrzej Wajda, and Zbigniew Rybczyński, among others.
During her time at the institution, she began using her classmates as models and met her future husband, Janusz Majewski, an author and director.
In discussing her early subjects, Nasierowska once said, “I chose girls who, like me, did not feel like beautiful beings. My first portraits amazed me: certainly, they are beautiful! They just don’t know themselves.”
Her unique approach to capturing beauty that often goes unnoticed led her to become one of Poland’s most renowned photographers.
