Diane Abbott is a British politician who has been a Member of Parliament since 1987. She is the first Black woman to be elected to the House of Commons and has served as Shadow Home Secretary and Shadow Minister for Health.
Diane Abbott was born on September 27, 1953, in Paddington, London. Her parents, Jamaican immigrants, moved to the UK in the 1950s as part of the Windrush generation.
Abbott grew up in Harrow, North London, and attended Harrow County Grammar School for Girls.
Abbott went on to study history at Newnham College, Cambridge, where she became politically active and joined the Labour Party. After graduating in 1976, she worked as a civil servant and a journalist before entering politics.
In 1987, Abbott was elected as the Member of Parliament for Hackney North and Stoke Newington, becoming the first Black woman to be elected to the House of Commons.
She has been re-elected in every subsequent election and is currently serving her tenth term.
Abbott has held several senior positions in the Labour Party, including Shadow Home Secretary and Shadow Minister for Health.
She has also been a prominent campaigner on issues such as anti-racism, gender equality, and social justice.
In 2023, Diane Abbott was suspended as Labour MP after racism letter.
She said “many types of white people with points of difference” can experience prejudice, in a letter published on Sunday.
But they are not subject to racism “all their lives”, she said.
She later tweeted to say she was withdrawing her remarks and apologised “for any anguish caused”.
Labour said the comments were “deeply offensive and wrong”.
